Beyond Rangoon (1995) is a biographical drama directed by John Boorman, starring Patricia Arquette, Frances McDormand and Spalding Gray. The film follows Laura Bowman (Arquette), an American tourist who, after personal tragedy, becomes entangled in the 1988 pro-democracy protests in Burma. As she journeys across the country with activist U Aung Ko (Gray), they witness the oppressive military regime's brutality and strive to escape to Thailand. The film, inspired by true events, was an official selection at the 1995 Cannes Film Festival.
